Backpack Drive 2014

backpackdrive_2We had such an amazing back-to-school day as part of last year’s National Health Center Week festivities! We are excited to celebrate the new school year again with our sweet patients and their kids in need.

This year we will have two back-to-school days–Monday August 11th we will be providing back-to-school physicals and on Tuesday August 12th our dental team will be administering dental check-ups for the children.

On both days we will be distributing back-packs full of school supplies! These backpacks will be given directly to the homeless and uninsured children that we see here at our health center, Orange Blossom Family Health.

The goal here is to fully prepare the kids for an awesome start to their school year! We’ll handle the medical and dental needs, but we need community support to get those backpacks ready!

Below is the list of school supplies we’re hoping to gather. The goal is to gather fifty bags and we need your help!

A Reason to Serve

Any reason to volunteer is a good reason. But our Information Technology (IT) volunteer Jerry has a very good reason.

At Health Care Center for the Homeless we have a great team of tireless volunteers. They cover a wide range of duties that help our clinic run just a little bit smoother week in and week out. One of those volunteers is Jerry.

Since the summer of 2013, Jerry has come to the clinic once a week for several hours to assist with general IT needs and repairs. Jerry first came to our clinic, Orange Blossom Family Health, not as a volunteer, but as a devoted son.

We couldn’t be more excited about this news! Thanks to grant funding that was awarded to us under the “New Access Point Funding,” an element of the Health Resources and Services Administration, we will be opening two new medical centers that will primarily focus on providing medical care to homeless individuals.

“Our service areas are Orange County, Osceola County and Seminole County,” says our CEO Bakari Burns. “But because we’re located in downtown Orlando, there are a lot of transportation barriers. So to fulfill our mission, we really must expand to meet the unique needs of the homeless in this community.”
